Sustainability

”Sustainability focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.”

Our Mission

Our planet is so fragile and delicate yet incredibly robust. It’s been around for millions of years withstanding meteorites, ice caps melting, bush fires, earthquakes and more.

Humans have been really really good at capitalising on our natural resources in a way that is completely unsustainable, think plastic production and oil consumption. The newer generations coming through are seeing this shift and making a change, they are standing up to big corporate companies by creating their own visions.

I guess you could say we are one of those groups making a change.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting us.

Locally sourced ingredients

All of our ingredients are sourced ethically.

We buy our ingredients in small batches from a local, woman owned, kiwi supplier. She says "These (her) ingredients must be ethically sourced and where possible we buy direct from the growers, so we can establish a relationship with them"

Almost all of our ingredients are BioGro certified. All of our ingredients are vegan and not tested on animals.

If you have any suggestions or queries please feel free to contact us hello@saltysusan.co.nz

Glass Bottles > Plastic bottles

We all know plastic is the enemy. When we created our original surf spray there was a very cheap option to use plastic bottles but that strongly goes against everything we stand for. So we opted for a gorgeous amber glass bottle.

Glass is uniquely sustainable as it can be recycled again and again without loss in quality, purity or clarity.

There are lots of plastic haircare options on the market. By not purchasing these, you're reducing the demand for plastic production!

Plastic free packaging

From day one we've had a zero plastic packaging policy. Our products are shipped in cardboard boxes, stuffed with wood wool to keep the glass safe and the bottles are nicely wrapped in brown kraft paper which is naturally biodegradable and compostable. We use compostable bags as well.

We also encourage people to reuse their packaging. Pass on the gift of sustainable packaging.

Use of bamboo instead of plastic

We choose to use bamboo instead of plastic for both our hair and surf combs. This was an easy choice.

Bamboo can be a very sustainable crop: a fast-growing grass, it requires no fertiliser and self-regenerates from its own roots, so it doesn't need to be replanted.

It also will naturally biodegrade over time. Therefor it's a better alternative for the environment and our oceans.
